CONJUNCTION 连。。。都/也 (Lián... Dōu/yě)
'Even' is used as an adverb when we want to add emphasis to show that something is surprising or extreme. it's a conjunction that emphasize certain surprising pieces of information in this example, 'even' is used to emphasize the fact that he was so poor that he did not have enough money for some food. He didn't even have enough money to buy some fresh fruit and veg.
Structure : 连 + Noun + 都/也 + Adjective/Verb/Phrase
Example :
这个连小孩都能读。
Zhège lián xiǎohái dōu néng dú.
Even a child can read this.
那里连夏天都很冷。
Nàlǐ lián xiàtiān dū hěn lěng.
It's cold there even in the summer.
我哥哥学习努力，连星期天都去图书馆。
Wǒ gēgē xuéxí nǔlì, lián xīngqítiān dū qù túshū guǎn.
My brother studies very hard. He even goes to the library on Sunday.
这个 问题 太 简单 了 ，连 三岁 小孩 都 知道 。
Zhège wèntí tài jiǎndān le, lián sān suì xiǎohái dōu zhīdào.
This question is so easy that even a three-year-old kid knows the answer.
这天气太热了，连巧克力都融化了。
Zhè tiānqì tài rèle, lián qiǎokèlì dōu rónghuà le。
The weather is so hot that even the chocolate has melted。
