2. CHINESE SLANG- 2

1. 啥 shá

This word is a shortened version of 什么 shénme (what) and is analogous to English contractions like “dunno” or “gonna”. For example, you might hear someone say 啥意思?shá yìsi? instead of 什么意思?shénme yìsi? to mean “what do you mean?”

2. 灯泡 dēngpào

It's used for an unwanted third person who is present when two other people, especially two people having a romantic relationship, want to be alone.

3. 夜猫子 yèmāozi

It's used for "night owl” , someone who regularly stays up late at night, or prefers to work late at night. The street noise and late-night parties make this hotel a haven for night owls.

4. 不咋的 (bù zǎ de)

不咋的 (bù zǎ de) means “not great,” or similar to saying in English “not so hot.” It can be used to describe a situation or a person.

5. 丑八怪 (chǒu bā guài)

This phrase is an extreme way of saying someone is ugly. It translates more to “monster-looking.” Depending on the situation, it can sometimes be used in an affectionate way to show that something is so ugly.
