Chinese is a tonal language. That means how you say things determines the meaning of what you’re saying. but before learning tones we necessarily to learn pinyin, it will help you understand how Chinese characters are pronounced, It funtions both like the alphabets and phonetic symbols in English. All the Chinese children learn pinyin firstly when they start to school,or even in kindergarten. In the textbooks for students in primary school learning Chinese, all characters have phonetic transcriptions (PINYIN) above their head. Pinyin is important as a foundation for learning Mandarin Chinese, especially to ensure that your pronunciation is correct from the beginning.
